As a cultural quarter and modern museum, the Humboldt Forum in the City Palace invites visitors to engage in a dialog between art and science.
Is the Humboldt Forum the same as the Berlin Palace? A question that some Berliners and visitors to Berlin are sure to have asked themselves at some point. While the Berlin Palace only refers to the façade of the building, the Humboldt Forum is what fills the imposing structure with life.
The Humboldt Forum unites various cultural and scientific institutions under one roof: the Ethnological Museum, the Museum of Asian Art, the Berlin Exhibition and the Humboldt Lab of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Following the principle of the former Berlin Kunstkammer, the permanent exhibitions and temporary projects are intended to create a link between art and science. This concept is based on the chambers of art and curiosities at the princely courts of the 16th century, in which the areas of nature, art and science were brought together. In addition, the eventful history of the place where the Berlin Palace stands today is thematized. The exhibition and event rooms in the Humboldt Forum are complemented by restaurants, cafés, bookshops and stores.
The collections of the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art present archaeological and art-historical objects on more than 17,000 square meters. The Ethnological Museum is dedicated to the past and present cultures of Africa, America, Asia, Australia and the South Seas. The Museum of Asian Art displays paintings, ceramics, sculptures and handicrafts from the 5th millennium BC to the present day. Flexible exhibition units allow the exhibits from the two museums to be put into context again and again and to address current issues. Temporary exhibition areas, showcases, junior areas and activity rooms ensure a dynamic exhibition culture.
The Humboldt Labor (Humboldt Lab) is presented by the Humboldt-Universität Berlin and is intended as a lively place for knowledge and science to provide information about their diversity and relevance. On 1000 square meters, a variety of topics and formats encourage visitors to inform themselves and participate. Exhibitions, workshops, experiments, lectures, discussion series, performances, media installations and research stations discuss the important questions of our time. The Humboldt Lab is also home to the Humboldt University Sound Archive - one of the most important collections of historical sound recordings in the world.
In the "Berlin Global" exhibition, Berliners and guests can rediscover the city of Berlin and engage with questions of the present and future. Connections between the capital and the world are highlighted. Across 4,000 square meters, visitors can explore topics such as migration, revolution, war, fashion, free spaces and borders as well as discovering the world from different perspectives in various rooms. Berlin is representative of the world's diverse metropolises.
