80 years after the end of the Second World War, Berlin is commemorating the historical caesura with a week of events. May 8 will be marked by the ongoing war in Ukraine, said Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU). It was not a day for "joyful celebration", instead May 8th should be a day of remembrance, commemoration and "never forgetting".
As in 2020, the historic date is a public holiday in Berlin - so most people don't have to work. Events are planned around it from May 2 to 11. At the start of the week of remembrance on May 2, Wegner will lay a wreath at the historical site of Berlin's surrender in 1945, the Schulenburgring in Tempelhof. On the same day, the open-air exhibition "Peace at last?!" will be opened on Pariser Platz. A specially composed oratorio with European artists also celebrates its premiere there.
On May 4, Wegner (CDU) and Brandenburg's Minister President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) meet Holocaust survivors at the memorial site of the former Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Margot Friedländer also takes part in the events. The 103-year-old Holocaust survivor will give a reading in Berlin's Rotes Rathaus on May 7 during the state's hour of remembrance.
On May 8, a wreath will be laid at the Soviet memorial in Schönholzer Heide. The Brandenburg Gate will be illuminated to mark the anniversary, Wegner announced - how exactly is still unclear. The concept for the events was developed in cooperation with institutions such as the Jewish Museum, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the German Resistance Memorial Center.
