Due to the domestic political situation in Turkey, Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner has canceled a trip to Istanbul planned for the week after next.

"I view the developments in Turkey, the imprisonment and suspension of the freely elected mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, with great concern," explained the CDU politician. In view of the ongoing imprisonment of his counterpart, he will not be traveling to Berlin's twin city on the Bosporus. "In a democracy, the rule of law, an independent judiciary, fair political competition and free elections must be guaranteed," Wegner emphasized. He added: "Solidarity with Ekrem Imamoglu."
