The Konzerthaus Berlin at Gendarmenmarkt is a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture and forms a beautiful ensemble with the German and French Cathedrals.

As early as 1776, a small comedy house was opened on this site at the instigation of Frederick the Great, built according to the plans of the Prussian chief architect Johann Bouman the Elder. Its renaming as the Royal National Theatre in 1787 underlined its rise to become one of the leading theaters in the country.

History of the Konzerthaus Berlin

At the beginning of the 19th century, Carl Gotthard Langhans was commissioned to build a new theater, which was ceremoniously opened on New Year's Day 1802. However, the theater fell victim to a fire in 1817, making a new building unavoidable. King Friedrich Wilhelm III awarded the contract for the theater to architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who was, however, bound by several of the king's specifications in his plans. After around three years of construction, the theater was inaugurated in 1821 in the presence of the king and renamed Königliches Schauspielhaus.

Schauspielhaus becomes Konzerthaus

After the Schauspielhaus was badly damaged by the fighting at the end of the Second World War, it was rebuilt as a concert hall between 1979 and 1984. In 1994, the Schauspielhaus was renamed Konzerthaus Berlin.
